Central Topic
Every two years, at the beginning of a new application round, the Akademie stipulates a new central topic within the context of its art, science & business program. To this end, fellows are selected in the fields of art, humanities, sciences, and business, internal and public events are organized and publications are released. All artists (fellows of the Akademie) are free to participate in projects related to the central topic, while this is mandatory for fellows in the art, science & business program.
Following the initiative of this year’s jury chairwoman Corinne Diserens, the Akademie will be dedicating itself to the topic of "Work Without Qualities" from autumn 2011 through summer 2013.
A loss of social ties, on the one hand, and the emergence of new communication strategies within homogenous social groups on the other has been experienced since the beginning of late capitalism and the resultant end of the "ethic of endurance", deemed the foundation of the employer-employee relationship.
Nowadays, as sociologist Richard Sennett explains, it is very much a question of creating relationships between individuals who can no longer rely on the stable organization of the working world.
With this new central topic, the Academy intends to initiate a far-reaching interdisciplinary discussion regarding the consequences of the change in work organization in contemporary society within the context of its art, science & business program from 2011 to 2013. By selecting this topic, the Academie wishes to address legal professionals, sociologists, economists, philosophers, anthropologists, and artists of all disciplines.
