Under the title City + War, Annett Zinsmeister assembles a wide range of photographs, drawings, and essays. Since the beginning of human history, dwellings and cities served to protect citizens and deter enemies. In light of the increasing threat that wars, attacks, and catastrophes represent to our cities, however, the fundamental question remains whether major urban centers in the 20th and 21st centuries can offer their residents adequate protection and security.

In numerous photographs and drawings, Zinsmeister documented the situation in Sarajevo during and after the siege (1992–1995). This book presents her comprehensive material on Sarajevo’s systematic destruction as well as its improvised protective spaces and defense systems. It records possibilities of how inner-city spaces can be transformed into breathing spaces. In her essays, Zinsmeister describes the historical development of the city as a protective space, depicts Sarajevo’s unique situation and reflects its survival methods with documentary media like photography and film. She exhibited the installation »urban shelter« on this topic at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2007.

Annett Zinsmeister, born in 1967 in Stuttgart and a Solitude fellow in 2005/2006, connects architecture, art, and media theory in her work. She has acted as a professor at the State Academy of the Visual Arts in Stuttgart since 2007. She has realized numerous publications and exhibitions, including constructing utopia.
