As Good as Gold
For their solo intervention at the barn of the Akademie, Apparatus 22 collective is unveiling its new work As Good as Gold. The second in a series of works building tension on the ambivalence of words – used both in the sacred sphere and consumerist vocabulary – this exhibition is a meditation from different vantage points on the arbitrariness of gold as a constructed measure for an economy of identities and differences within which power and desire circulate. Could the peculiar perfection contained within gold and its endless capacity for representation be mimicked by something less (or more) than gold? In a gesture of positive destruction, Apparatus 22 wonders whether we have the capacity to hold on to other common grounds when suddenly conscious of arbitrary perceived values. The immersive installation of the Romanian collective is complemented with an artist introduction and listening sessions of The Hour Broadcast, a joint sound installation of Apparatus 22, StudioBASAR and Sillyconductor.
The exhibition As Good as Gold is realized with the friendly support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin and the Apparatus 22 Circle of Friends 2014–2015.
During the weekends September 5th to 7th | 12th to 14th | 19th to 21st the exhibition of Apparatus 22 in the barn is open in presence of the artists from 2–7 pm.
Across the Grid
Inspired by the history of Schloss Solitude, the multi-channel video installation Across the Grid documents a chess match, which took place at the castle. Professional chess players play on a chessboard without grid but with the imprint of the rococo garden map that used to exist in the forest 250 years ago when Schloss Solitude was built. The audience is invited to experience the match with different variations, following the movement of the chess pieces during the match. Thereby, the observer can see how the chess pieces move through the garden across the invisible grid on the chessboard. But how does the construction of the experience work when the same moment is repeated in different variations and forms?
Serial Nature || Collapse and Emergence within Systems
The works of the exhibition Serial Nature || Collapse and Emergence within Systems contain numerous sculptures of the German-born artist Kai Franz, who lives and works in the United States. Produced were these sculptures with the Plopper (Dual-Axis Precision Deposition System), a hijacked large-format printer (Plotter), which now functions as a kind of low-res 3D printer. The virtual 3D models and CAD drawings that the works in this show are based on were partly found and appropriated online, others the artist developed himself. The virtual ready-made models originate from an app that generates digital geometry algorithmically using photos of real objects. They are the blurred result of images from real-life objects with an anonymous origin. Meanwhile, the CAD drawings were directly developed as »food« for the machine. Reproduced as »Plopps« these sculptures combine in both cases algorithmic demarcation with the will of matter, and the malfunction of technology as aesthetical experiment.
On the opening evening, together with Martin Beck, Kai Franz will present his artist book Serial Nature || Collapse and Emergence within Systems which will be published at Edition Solitude.
