Close Encounters of an Other Architecture
In Close Encounters of an Other Architecture Devin Jernigan brings us to the threshold between human and animal, safety and danger, void and space, sanity and paranoia, abject and clinical, normal and abnormal, common and uncanny, and on and on. There are two architecture projects on display: The Animal House and The Four Seasons in One Head. Devin Jernigan is an architect and researcher. He works with the latent desires in humans that are enablers of an architecture.
Modern Management Methods
Catilin Blanchfield & Farzin Lotfi-Jam
Architectural historian Caitlin Blanchfield and architect Farzin Lofti-Jam are presenting their exhibition Modern Management Methods that investigates the preservation of modern architecture as cultural asset and the processes by which buildings become historical artefacts. Using the imaging techniques of conservation and documentary methods of heritage preservation, the exhibition surveys two Le Corbusier houses at Stuttgart’s Weissenhofsiedlung to ask how subjective scientific methods produce stable notions of history and value for architecture.
Both houses have been adeed to the UNESCO world heritage list in 2016.
Nina Støttrup Larsen
What does it mean when the currency of 14 African states is being printed, designed and produced in the heart of the territory of their former colonial ruler? How does this state of affairs not disprove the myth of sovereignty for these African states? The production facility of the Franc CFA (a monetary unit used by several countries in West Africa) is located in the heart of France, situated right next to a dormant volcano with a newly restored Roman temple to Mercury, God of finance and theft, of trade and trickery, of borders and lies.
Nina Støttrup Larsens installation Fixed Parity is a landscape of articulation around the currency Franc CFA, and the role of France and Europe in its construction, maintenance and current invisibility.
Resolutions organize what gets seen, and what is dismissed, obfuscated, or even forgotten. But who is responsible for setting these resolutions? Who gets to decide the hegemonic conventions that resolve the image? How do these standards come into being?
Dutch artist and researcher Rosa Menkman aims to provide some answers to these questions with her new publication Beyond Resolution.
Sun and Sea, 2017
by Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė, Lina Lapelytė
Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, Vaiva Grainytė, and Lina Lapelytė will present their video installation Sun and Sea, 2017 which is based on a documentation of the performance of the opera Sun and Sea, premiered at the International Theatre Festival Sirenos, at the Lithuanian National Gallery of Art, Vilnius 2017.
Sandy beach in a bright summer light is covered by vacationers, lying on their colorful towels. Mosaic of different stories, narrated by singing bodies gradually grow into the global chorus of one ecosystem. The beach is observed from the solar perspective, from above, as if mankind were bugs. Under the topology of lazy holidays – burning time and burning skin –there is a hidden intuition of the end: temporality of human bodies, as well as the body of earth.
The authors of the opera Sun and Sea in their collaborative work pay special attention on the relationship between documentation and fiction, realism and poetry, as well as on the crossover of theatre, music and fine arts.
In March 2018 a German version of the work will be produced with the Staatsschauspiel Dresden.
Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė works as a theatre and film director.
Vaiva Grainytė is a writer, playwright, and poet.
Lina Lapelytė is a visual and performance artist and musician.
