Born 1984 in Hagen/Germany.
Dirk Baumann has been a dramaturg at Schauspiel Dortmund/Germany since 2013. He studied German linguistics, European ethnology/cultural science and philosophy at Philipps-Universität Marburg/Germany as well as curating in the performing arts at the universities of Salzburg/Austria and Munich/Germany (LMU). During his first course of study, he assisted and was a trainee at the Burgtheater Wien/Austria, Theater an der Parkaue Berlin/Germany and Staatstheater Kassel/Germany. After his studies, he worked as a freelance assistant and dramaturg for Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin and Komische Oper Berlin, among others with Armin Petras and Sebastian Baumgarten. Alongside this, he developed several productions in cooperation with director Anja Gronau and the drama group PortFolio Inc. at Berliner Theater unterm Dach, latest Untertan. Wir sind dein Volk.
After one year as an assistant director at the Nationaltheater Weimar/Deutschland, where he also did his first work as a director, the production Kein Ort. Nirgends by Christa Wolf, Dirk Baumann started as an assistant dramaturg at Schauspiel Dortmund in 2012, before becoming a dramaturg in 2013. Amongst many, he collaborated with Kay Voges (Endspiel, Das Fest, Die Borderline Prozession), Claudia Bauer (Die Simulanten, Schöpfung), Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson (Im Irrgarten des Wissens), Sascha Hawemann (Eine Familie, Furcht und Elend des Dritten Reiches, Der Kirschgarten), Jan Friedrich (Hedda Gabler), Liesbeth Coltof (Verbrennungen), and Laura N. Junghanns (Orlando, Everything Belongs to the Future). Die Borderline Prozession (directed by Kay Voges), for which he acted as dramatic advisor and co-author, was invited to Berliner Theatertreffen 2017.
An emphasis of his work lies within the transdisciplinary intersection between performing and visual arts: Dirk Baumann will curate the festival Inbetween – Theater zwischen Vorstellung und Ausstellung, that will be on show at Schauspiel Dortmund in April of 2020.
Also a focal point of his work are strategies of intermediation and cultural education. Together with Sarah Jasinszczak, he has been the head of the youth workshop format Herbstakademie, and he also holds a teaching position at the Fachhochschule Dortmund.
2019, Dirk Baumann, together with Laura N. Junghanns, initiated the new series Butler, Butch, Beyoncé, which is concerned with current developments in feminism. He was awarded the Marie Zimmermann Fellowship 2019.
