Johanna Markert studied fine arts at Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste and English Literature and Linguistics at the University of Stuttgart.
Besides her own artistic projects, she initiated an interdisciplinary lecture and workshop series together with fellow students at Staatliche Akademie der Künste in Stuttgart in 2015 which is now continued in its fifth edition.
In 2016, Johanna Markert joined the trio anorak and together with Lukas Ludwig and Florian Model. They run the non-profit organisation Anorak e.V., thinking through various formats such as exhibitions, dinners, talks, and screenings, anorak develops artistic and curatorial projects in close dialogue with international and local artists. Their project Mixed Feelings (2016-2017) was realised in collaboration with Künstlerhaus Stuttgart and Palermo Gallery and took the form of two exhibitions and an event series in Stuttgart and Karlsruhe. In 2017 anorak took part in the exhibition When a Wave Rolls Out and the Next One Has Not Yet Broken at Solitude’s project space Römerstraße 2A. From 2018 anorak is part of the studio residency programme at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart.
From 2015 and 2018, Johanna Markert worked at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart. Most recently as part of the curatorial team of the production platform Techne, a collaboration with the experimental theatre Theater Rampe (Marie Bues and Martina Grohmann). The project, which enabled artists and collectives to develop new commissions across the theatre stage and the exhibition space, included an events and performance programme, publications, a festival and the exhibition Techne and the Decency of Means (co-curated with Fatima Hellberg).
