01. July 2018 - 28. February 2019

Born 1980 in Nashville, TN/USA.

Michael Winter holds a BS in Music from the University of Oregon, OR/USA, a MFA in Music Composition from the California Institute of the Arts, CA/USA, and a Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology - University of California Santa Barbara, CA/USA.

Michael Winter's work explores simple processes where dynamic systems, situations, and settings are defined through minimal graphic- and text-based scores. The considerations of computability are integral to his practice. Epistemological limits are reconciled with artistic practicality through considering and addressing the limits of computation from a musical and experiential vantage point and by collaborating with other artists, mathematicians, and scientists in order to integrate objects, ideas, and texts from various domains as structural elements in his pieces.

In November 2016, his work preliminary thoughts, which addresses the writings of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in a »musical letter« to mathematician Greg Chaitin, was presented on the 300th anniversary of Leibniz's death in Torino/Italy. Recently, he completed a kinetic sculpture/sound installation entitled rockfall, a machine that drops rocks on rocks, in collaboration with Sergio Abugattás Tenaud while in residence at GoctaLab in Cocachimba/Peru.

Michael Winter has performed at venues ranging in size from small basements to large museums to outdoor public spaces (some examples of festivals and venues include REDCAT, Los Angeles/USA; the Ostrava Festival of New Music; Tsonami Arte Sonoro Festival, Valparaiso/Chile; the Huddersfield New Music Festival; and Umbral Sesiones at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Oaxaca/Mexico). In 2008, he co-founded the wulf., a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to experimental performance and art. As a laboratory and hub for exploring new ideas, the wulf. has become an experiment in alternative communities and economies. Similarly, his work subverts discriminatory conventions and hierarchies by exploring alternative forms of presentation and interaction. Since 2016, he has been touring/traveling extensively in Europe and the Americas (den USA?). When not traveling, he resides in Los Angeles, CA/USA.
