Negar Tahsili has been painting professionally since 1996. In 1998 she started studying industrial design at Tehran Azad University. She finished her studies (MA) with a final project that is patented as an invention. In 2000 she became a member of »AIP« (association of Iranian painters) and in 2007 a member of the inventor’s association in Iran.
Cinema has always been a passion. Since 2005, Tahsili has been collaborating with Swedish and Swiss production companies on several series of documentary films. She made documentaries about stereotypical perspectives of Iran, questions of gender between tradition and modernity, and the position of the individual in society. Alongside her filmmaking practice, her visual art projects have been shown around the world and she curates exhibitions on Iranian video art. Her collection Tehran 2008 was shown in Turkey, Macedonia, and the USA. In the past few years, she has also shot many short films about contemporary artists in Iran for foreign broadcasters.
Negar Tahsili has received two fellowships from the Akademie der Künste der Welt (Academy of the Arts of the World) in Cologne/Germany (2014 and 2016). In 2019, she was granted a one-month residency in Tunisia and 12-months residency by Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. From 2014 until now she has given some lectures and workshops about low-budget films and making films under difficult conditions in many universities and institutions like Cologne university, KHM university in Cologne, Stuttgart University/Germany, Leipzig Iranian film festival/Germany, Akademie der Künste der Welt in Cologne, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Berlin/Germany and Strasbourg University/France.
