Born 1940 in Cape Town.

Studied for many years in England and the U.S., has since returned to his home town where he is a professor of linguistics and literature.

Along with Breyten Breytenbach and Nadine Gordimer he is regarded as one of South Africa's most significant writers.

Numerous international awards, including the 1986 Booker Prize and the 1987 Jerusalem Prize.

In 1974 his first novel "Dusklands" was published. This was followed by "In the Heart of the Country" (1977), the German version of which "Im Herzen des Landes" was published by the Hanser Verlag in 1978; "Life & Times of Michael K. (1983)" / "Leben und Zeit des Michael K." (Hanser, 1986); "Foe" (1986) "Mr. Cruso, Mrs. Barton und Mr. Foe" (Hanser, 1990); "Age of Iron" (1990)/"Eiserne Zeit" (1995); "The Master of Petersburg" (1994)/"Der Meister von Petersburg" (1996).
