One of the specific phenomena related to it is the arrival of luxury cars in cities like Medellín and Cali, where these types of vehicles were previously absent. In its lyrics, this Latin musical genre constantly reveals and addresses excess. Reggaeton takes much of its style and culture from genres such as hip-hop and gangsta rap. And just like rap and hip-hop performers who literally require gold and diamonds to legitimize themselves, today a reggaeton artist without big logos on his clothes or luxury cars is not a true reggaetonero.

The cultural impact of this genre in Colombia is undeniable, and its influence extends far beyond music. Living in an economy in which it is increasingly difficult to make money, Tooxic Dreams is a critique of the context of concerns about money laundering and the circulation of money in the reggaeton industry. The player acquires dirty money (capital) represented by dollar signs on each of the game’s stages. When more than ten units have been collected, an algorithmic laundering process begins. As money laundering seeks to be as unpredictable as possible, this is not a rational formula. On the contrary, its forms are arbitrary. Its tactics are complex, multifaceted, and often unpredictable, designed to evade detection and confuse. By introducing an algorithmic logic to the game’s washing process, Zambrano creates a system that responds to player behavior.

The choice of symbols, such as the dollar and bubbles, is deliberate. The dollar, widely recognized as a symbol of wealth and power, represents the initial capital that needs to be »cleaned.« Bubbles, on the other hand, symbolize the ephemeral and volatile nature of laundered money, as well as the transformation of »dirty« money into »clean« capital. Just as money transforms, so do cars. Tuning allows them to acquire an essence that reflects the situation. Thus the car wash becomes a space that allows the elite to erase their tracks, modify their appearance, and earn money.

These changes in the appearance of the vehicles are proof that there is a link between Latin America and Germanythat tries to remain hidden, and that thanks to Tooxic Dreams becomes impossible to ignore: the corrupt European elite takes advantage of the Latin American elite to increase its profits in an economy in which industrial manufacturing is becoming increasingly expensive. The development of Tooxic Dreams thus takes place in the city of Stuttgart, capital of the automobile industry.

Zambrano's work invites reflection on the nature of our participation in society and questions whether we really have the control we think we have, or whether we are simply spectators in a larger game that we cannot influence.

Credits
Research, concept, and video game design: Tatyana Zambrano
Developer: José Alejandro Coronado
3D animator: Hernán Rodriguez
DJ: @Samuelath

This work was supported by Akademie Schloss Solitude.

All images courtesy Tatyana Zambrano

Tooxic Dreams
Tooxic Dreams by Tatyana Zambrano, a three- chapter video game environment, was realized during Zambrano’s residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude and references the German automobile industry with its high degree of specialization and automation, the reggeaton culture from Latin america, the petrochemical macho car tuning culture, as well as entanglements with tax fraud and money laundering hyper-eccentricity aesthetics.
