The piece envelops the listener in a melodic portrayal of the Greek myth about Psamathe, the Greek Nereid goddess of sand, detailing her abduction by Aikos, her transformation into a seal, and the subsequent loss of her son.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">During my residency in Liverpool, I explored the Lady Lever Art Gallery, where Frederic Leighton\u2019s painting with the same title captivated me. It depicted a nude female on the seashore, facing away in a pose of melancholic anticipation. Contemplating this painting, I pondered the varying emotions associated with waiting, influenced by the shoreline. Reflecting in 2023, I revisited this painting and my perceptions of time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Back then, I contemplated the sea as a unifying force between two distant shores \u2013 Liverpool and Odessa. Waiting on each coast held distinct emotions and illusions on the horizon. Viewing the sea from the Ukrainian side symbolized a quest for peace amid the precarious reality of a country at war in the east, a conflict yet to touch me personally. That year, my demon was a chronic illness altering my identity through intense medications.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">In Liverpool, a place of safety, I gazed back toward Odessa\u2019s direction, yearning for home and freedom not to be found \u00bbin the West.\u00ab Strangely, the sea from my native shore symbolized threat and unpredictability, while from the other side, it evoked thoughts of drowning and oblivion. Tranquility and calmness were illusory perspectives.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Psamathe, the goddess of sand, served as a metaphor for an element interdependent with the sea. Its materiality stemmed from tangible energy, not maritime delusions. I identified with Psamathe\u2019s story, drawn to her painful experience of corporeal mutation, believing vocal storytelling conveyed it aptly.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">Today, after Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, the loss of friends, migration, and another health crisis induced by major stress, the sea reflects a cemetery of grief. Listening to <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Songs to the Sea<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">, I mourn Psamathe\u2019s loss of homeland, identity, and loved ones. In these dark times, I increasingly believe in the transformative power of voice for pain relief and healing.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Europe\u2019s brother<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">He left his island surrounded by high rocks<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and arrived on an unfamiliar shore.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The ants scurry behind him \u2013<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">his slaves, gifted by his father.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Aikos\u2019s movements are confident,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">dark eyes look into new spaces<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and into Psamathe.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">3<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Psamathe tries to answer Aikos,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">but she is unable to utter the words \u2013<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they coalesce into a growl.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Psamathe loses strength in her legs <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and falls into the sand<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it becomes more comfortable to crawl:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">her arms break, <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">fall away from the rest of her body,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the skin burns, peels,<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and dark blue scales appear<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">from under the bloody cracks in the skin.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a04<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Psamathe is located on the coast<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of the Aikos island<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">looking at the sea horizon.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Next to her, there is her son called Fok.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Aikos looks at them from behind.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">5\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A local healer tries to comfort Psamathe after the loss of her son.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">She changes her into black clothes,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">puts a black scarf on a head,\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and leads her across the island\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to a remote dungeon<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">where the islanders gather<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for a collective
