Special Fellowships

Namibia-Baden-Württemberg Residencies

Together with the National Art Gallery of Namibia and the Goethe-Institut Namibia, Akademie Schloss Solitude has been organizing the Namibia–Baden-Württemberg Residencies since 2020 as part of the State of Baden-Württemberg’s Namibia Initiative.

The residencies are aimed at artists from Namibia and artists from Baden-Württemberg who work across the fields of visual and performing arts, music/sound, design, literature, and art education/mediation.

»Zwangsarbeit/en – Work Force/d« Residencies

»Zwangsarbeit/en – Work Force/d« examines sites of National Socialist forced labor in Stuttgart as starting points for contemporary artistic interventions.

The residencies make these sites legible again and negotiate both their historical traces and their significance for present-day social structures and current forms of dependent and precarious labor.

»Field Trip« Residency Program

Akademie Schloss Solitude together with the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (MPI-AB), Department for the Ecology of Animal Societies (EAS) have established a residency program to foster interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and perspectives between the arts and sciences. Since 2022, »Field trip« offers an adventure of going to a new place, an experience of being in a different environment and an opportunity to experiment with ideas.

The philosophy of this exchange is to motivate practices of mutual knowledge creation and dissemination through the lens of multiple epistemologies and different perspectives.

Jean-Jacques-Rousseau Fellowship

The Jean-Jacques Rousseau fellowship program, founded in 2011, was established in order to provide authors of both sexes with financial support in emergency situations of all kinds, be it political, economic or other difficulties. It is hoped that the fellowship will allow them to pursue their literary activities in improved conditions. The program is being sponsored by a citizen of Stuttgart who wishes to promote contemporary literature with this unique fellowship and prefers not to be named.

Marie Zimmermann Fellowship

In April 2008, the former director of the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, Friedrich Schirmer, endowed a fellowship designed to support a young dramatist from the German-speaking theater scene in memory of Marie Zimmermann, the dramatist and festival organizer who died in 2007. Akademie Schloss Solitude is responsible for organizing and awarding the fellowship.

Solitude Exchange Network

The Solitude Exchange Network (SEN) is an international artist-in-residence exchange program between Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany, and partner organizations in Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Serbia.

The aim of the Solitude Exchange Network is to foster transnational connections and cultural exchange between the respective local art scenes. Through residency exchanges, artists are given the opportunity to live and work abroad for three months and engage with a different cultural context.

Web Residencies

The Web Residencies program was initiated by Akademie Schloss Solitude in 2016 to support young talents from the international digital scene as well as artists of all disciplines who deal with web-based practices to present the process and results of their work online.

Akademie Schloss Solitude launches several calls for Web Residencies a year. Artists are invited to experiment with digital technologies and new art forms, and reflect on the topics set by the curators or curatorial collectives.

Cooperation Fellowship

In cooperation with local and regional partners, Akademie Schloss Solitude offers fellowships in the context of joint projects.
