Rosemary Lee is an artist and researcher based in Porto/Portugal. Born in Providence, Rhode Island/USA in 1986, she combines artistic practice and theoretical investigation to explore how contemporary discourse on art and technology is shaped by historical tendencies.
Lee holds a PhD in Digital Design from the IT University of Copenhagen (2020), an MA with Distinction in Media and Communication from The European Graduate School (2012), and a BFA with Honors from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2008). She is a Guest Assistant Professor in the Masters in Multimedia program at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Porto (FEUP).
Her practice-led research for her PhD focused on generative machine learning systems and their connections to deep historical currents in imaging technologies. Building on her dissertation Machine Learning and Notions of the Image (2020), Lee’s book Algorithm, Image, Art (2024) examines how algorithmic methods in image-making shape our understanding of contemporary generative systems.
Recent projects include A Structural Plan for Imitation (2024), a video installation expanding on her research into artificial intelligence, created during a residency at the European Media Art Platform (EMAP). Her work Molten Media: Supernatural (2013–18, 2024) reframes natural history through the lens of media technologies.
