Born in Austria in 1969.

Sylvia Winkler studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart/Germany. Her artistic practice focuses on the visual translation of research on political, urban and historical issues into diagrams and drawings.

She has been collaborating with Stephan Köperl on the creation of a series of projects, which they realize in a wide variety of countries and contexts, since 1997. Winkler/Köperl have worked on subjects as broad as the electoral system in Indonesia, a Korean Smart City, the International Criminal Court for Ex-Yugoslavia in The Hague/Netherlands and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Winkler/Köperl develop their videos and interventions in urban space from on-site observations and research and implement them specifically for the respective situation.

Winkler’s work has been shown at the Bosnia Biennial of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei/Taiwan, the DOX Center for Contemporary Art in Prague/Czech Republic, the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal/Canada, the Total Museum in Seoul/South Korea and the Staatstheater Stuttgart, among others.

Sylvia Winkler has held the post of first deputy chairwoman of the Kunstverein Wagenhalle in Stuttgart since 2018.
