Calendal Klose

Born in Berlin.

Calendal lives and works in Stuttgart and Jena. Working across theatre direction, art, writing, dramaturgy, and curating, Calendal studied applied theatre studies in Giessen with Heiner Goebbels and Bojana Kunst, and theatre direction at ZHdK in Zurich with Stefanie Lorey. An artistic doctorate is currently being developed at HKB in Bern, focusing on marginalized, migrant, and queer forms of theatre in Germany and Switzerland.

Calendal’s artistic and curatorial practice explores how the arts can shift from the centre to the margins and how speculative futures can be imagined from these perspectives. The work frequently employs speculative documentary approaches and engages with the perspective of a body in transition.

From 2021 to 2023, Calendal was a fellow of the Swiss Embassies and an appointed member of the City of Bern’s Art Commission. A danceWEB fellowship followed under the mentorship of Florentina Holzinger and Meg Stuart. Together with the collective die apokalyptischen tänzerin*nen, Calendal received an award at the 6 Tage Frei Festival in 2021 for the production Banana Island. The collective is currently developing the third part of its series on political laughter, set to premiere at Theater Rampe in autumn 2027.

Recent work includes the play Staging Protest, co-authored with Yvonne Schäfer, which will premiere at Theater Heilbronn in November 2026.
