Hanna Katharina Steinmetz studied at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen from 2003 to 2006 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in cultural studies and communication sciences. She received a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and studied sociology at the University of London (Master of Arts 2008).

In 2004, Hanna Katharina Steinmetz worked as an intern at the Galerie für Kunst und Neue Medien (Gallery of Arts and New Media) in Basel and in 2005, as an intern at the Kulturkreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft im BDI e. V., in Visual Arts in Berlin. In 2006 and 2007, she supported the Siemens Art Program as project assistant in the area of contemporary and cultural history.
