Karin Krauthausen studied literature und comparative literature, Italian and art history at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, at the Freie Universität Berlin (Free University Berlin) and at the Università degli Studi di Firenze. She graduated in cultural studies from the Humboldt-University Berlin with her work a volonté de voir. Drawing and Seeing by Paul Valéry.

From 2000 to 2003 Karin Krauthausen was a fellow at the research group Bild-Körper-Medium (Image, Body, Medium). An anthropological perspective at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe (University of Design, Media and Arts in Karlsruhe). Between 2005 and 2006 she worked as an assistant in the research group Das Leben schreiben (Life writing). Media technologies and the sciences of life 1800–1900 at the Bauhaus University in Weimar. In 2007, between January and March, Karin Krauthausen was visiting researcher at the post-graduate program Codierung von Gewalt im medialen Wandel (The coding of violence in medial transformations) at the Humboldt University in Berlin. Since April 2007, she is a doctorate fellow at the institutional research initiative Knowledge in the Making. Drawing and Writing as Research Techniques at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin and the Institute of Art History in Florence (Max Planck Institute).

Karin Krauthausen puts her main focus on: European literature of the 19th and 21st century; Imaginative techniques in literature, film and comic; Making notes as a design technique; Forms in realism in science and arts. During her stay at Solitude, Karin Krauthausen deals with the strategies of artistic protest realism in the 20th and 21st Century.
