Nicole Graaf works as a freelance journalist in foreign reporting and science journalism for German and international media. Since 2017, she has teamed up with Turkish photographer Emre Çaylak.
She studied ethnology, journalism, and Central Asia studies at the universities in Leipzig/Germany and Halle (Saale)/Germany. After her graduation in 2007, she has been a fellow of the program science journalism and foreign reporting of Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation). From 2012 to 2013, she attended the Zeitenspiegel Reportageschule in Reutlingen/Germany. Moreover, she did internships at P.M., Stern, Stern Gesund Leben, Kulturaustausch, China office of Frankfurter Rundschau/Tagesspiegel, China office of the ARD Hörfunk, and Nindo Films.
Besides, she received scholarships of Heinz-Kühn-Stiftung for a research project on informal gold miners in Mongolia (2011), Karl-Gerold-Stiftung (2012/2013), Deutsches Institut für Menschenrechte (German Institute for Human Rights) for the research on working conditions in the Indian shoe manufacturing (2016), and the Olin-Stipendium of Netzwerk-Recherche together with photographer Emre Çaylak (2017). For a radio feature on the same topic Nicole was awarded the Willi Bleicher prize in the radio category in 2017.
Currently, she is working on a long-term project about the nearly extinct vaquita whale in Mexico which will result in a multimedia piece and a documentary film. For this project she received the Olin-Stipendium of Netzwerk-Recherche together with photographer Emre Çaylak (2017)
Together with the photographer Sudharak Olwe, in 2017 she received the Gabriel Grüner fellowship of Zeitenspiegel Reportagen in connection with a stay at Akademie Schloss Solitude.
Nicole lives in Cologne/Germany and Istanbul/Turkey.
