Studied cello and voice at the Academy of Musical Arts in Darmstadt, the University of Music Karlsruhe and the Conservatoire in Strasbourg.

Opera and concert singer in Germany and in France, especially in collaboration with Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod.

After studying music theater (directing) at the Unversity and Academy for music and performing arts in Hamburg, Ackermann worked as producer and music dramaturge in Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart.

As a director she worked with the conductors Carlos Kleiber, Karl Böhm, Michael Gielen, René Jacobs and Georges Prêtre.

Lecturing professor at various music academies, most recently at the University of Music Karlsruhe, where she has been director of the Institute for Music Theater since 1993.

Over the last years she produced many music theater productions with students, among others, with regular participation of conductor and composer Peter Eötvös or Jörg Mainka (Academy Schloss Solitude fellow in 1996 and currently lecturer at the MHS Karlsruhe).

Renate Ackermann was the Akademie jury chair from 2000 to 2003.
