Susann Maria Hempel lives and works in Greiz. From 2001 to 2009 she studied media design at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany.

For the realization of her experimental films DIE FLIEGEN (The Birds II) from 2010, Wie ist die Welt so stille from 2012, DER GROSSE GAMMEL from 2013, which deal with the precarious present of her birthplace, she received numerous awards, amongst them various working stipends by Kulturstiftung des Freistaats Thüringen (2009, 2011, 2012), the Videokunst Förderpreis Bremen (2012), and the scholarship for short films cast&cut; in Hannover/Germany. Her newest experimental film Sieben Mal am Tag beklagen wir unser Los und nachts stehen wir auf, um nicht zu träumen was awarded with the prize for the best contribution in the German competition at Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Germany, the Deutschen Kurzfilmpreis 2014 in the category experimental film and the Grand Prix Labo at the International Short Film Festival Clermont-Ferrand, France.
