Studied composition with Eugen Werner Velte in Karlsruhe, Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologne, Klaus Huber in Freiburg i. Br., with Wolfgang Fortner and Humphrey Searle.
Since 1970 participation and since 1978 lecturer at the International Summer Courses in Darmstadt.
1973 – 81 teaching positions in Karlsruhe and Munich.
Since 1986 professor for composition in Karlsruhe.
Wolfgang Rihm lives in Karlsruhe.
