Born 1969 in Plunge/Lithuania.

Žilvinas Kempinas took his first degree in painting from the Vilnius Art Academy from which he graduated in 1993. From 1998 to 2002 he studied combined media at Hunter College, New York from where he gained an MFA.

Kempinas was featured in various international solo and group exhibitions. Among others at the Kunsthalle, Vienna/Austria, 2008 (solo exhibition), »White Noise«, Spencer Brownstone Gallery, New York, 2007 (solo exhibition) and several exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Center in Vilnius/Lithuania. His works were also shown in group exhibitions around the world, such as Korea, Sweden, France, Canada, the US and Turkey.
In 2009 he takes part in the Venice Biennale.

Kempinas was awarded several grants and awards such as the Calder Prize and the Atelier Calder Residency Award (2007/08), the Kristoforas Award for best theatre stage design (1998), Vilnius/Lithuania and the Westerly Trust Grant, London, UK, 1994. In 1994, he was a fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude.
