A small group of current Solitude fellows invites you to their one-night-only exhibition Unframing on June 15, 2023, from 6–10 pm at Akademie Schloss Solitude’s Projektraum Römerstraße.
The frame, as a device, places objects in our field of view, focusing on some pieces of information, while omitting others. Framing becomes powerful in determining what is worth examining – in images, texts, and concepts. The limits of the frame, as a space, become most interesting when objects or figures move in and out of it. To break this boundary becomes a way of gesturing to relations or contexts that extend beyond the frame, dissolving the absoluteness of what we see within its determined enclosure.
Unframing urges us to look outside the limits of what we see, to question the subjectivity of what is made visible within the frame. Each of these works calls into question different modes of looking – questioning how frames as structures can be undone – to reformat, reframe or resist conventional ways of understanding. If the space of the frame becomes porous and slippery rather than remaining rigid and fixed, what pieces of information and perspectives do we gain? How do we train ourselves to look beyond these limits, not only broadening the frame, but perhaps doing away with it altogether?
