Which part of the experienced past does remain in memory? What are the events that are kept in a society’s collective memory? What events remain hidden, how are they memorized, what are the parameters of memory and which meaning do they have for the collective history?

In the exhibition States of Sensing, Karolina Grzywnowicz, Tom Rosenberg, Aykan Safoğlu and Naomi Waltham-Smith explore different acts of witnessing and investigate how they shape the collective memory of political and social histories.

In their works, the artists thematize forgotten and overlooked narratives to question the modalities and materialities of what constitutes the act of witnessing.

These examples operate at the boundaries of human perception and emphasize the complex relationship between the mediated representation and symbolic languages as forms of remembrance.

Karolina Grzywnowicz’s project Weeds is dedicated to a specific set of plants that act as a unique record of social and political history and can be found in places that are now deserted but were formerly densely populated villages in southeast Poland.

Tom Rosenberg thematizes forensic investigator Louie Akin’s experience reconstructing the 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood/USA in Nothing Human.

Aykan Safoğlu’s work ziyaret, visit is an attempt to sensitively deal with loss and transgression while visiting graves on the Old St. Matthew’s Cemetery in Berlin.

Naomi Waltham-Smith explores contemporary modalities of listening that allocate dissent and resistance to either silence or inarticulate noise in Antifascist Silent Disco.

Tom Rosenberg and Aykan Safoğlu will be present on the opening nihgt and will give a short introduction into their work. Karolina Grzywnowicz and Naomi Waltham-Smith will give an artist talk on November 30, 5 pm.
