As part of the Flussatmosphäre program at Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, filmmaker Louis Henderson (fellow in the Visual Sphere of Practice, 2025) presents his latest film, Afterthoughts of a Walk on the Naze (2024).

The film begins with a fictional and deeply personal premise: shortly before his death, Henderson’s great-uncle – the artist Nigel Henderson – leaves behind a letter addressed to Henderson in the future. In it, he asks Louis to decipher a painting of the fossiliferous cliffs at Walton on the Naze in Essex, England. Enclosed is a photocopied manuscript of the novel The Fourbanks of the River of Space by South American writer Wilson Harris, who once lived nearby.

Blending documentary and speculative elements, Afterthoughts of a Walk on the Naze becomes a form of »quantum fiction« – a cinematic reflection on artistic legacy, memory, death, weather, and time. Through visits to the house and studio where the painting was created, Henderson traces the surrounding coastal landscape and the layered meanings embedded in image, text, and place.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with the artist about the film and a new film he is currently working on in Guyana.
