In an essay that was recently published in the newspaper Die Zeit on the content of reality in literary text, Juli Zeh pleads for a release from authenticity. The “secret agreement between author and reader called fictionality” has transformed itself into a mixture of “voyeurism and a process of indicators”. “It seems,” says the author, “as if the age of communication, with its innumerable forms of transfer and conveyance, the copy and the quote, creates a strong hunger for immediacy. This is now supposed to be fed by exactly the most artificial of expressive forms – from art.” On January 18, Zeh reads from her newest book Alles auf dem Rasen (Everything on the Lawn) (Schöffling & Co) and discusses the foundation of the thesis of her Zeit essay and questions of authenticity with Jean-Baptiste Joly.
Juli Zeh (*1974 in Bonn) lives and works as an author and freelance legal counsel in Leipzig and is getting her doctorate degree in international law at the University of Saarbrücken. Zeh became known as an author in her novel debut Adler und Engel (Eagles and Angels) (2001). More books followed: Die Stille ist ein Geräusch, (Silence is a Sound) 2002; Ein Hund läuft durch die Republik (A Dog Runs Through the Republic) (Pub.), 2004; Spieltrieb (Play Instinct), 2004 and Alles auf dem Rasen in 2006. She also regularly writes essays and articles for the press. As a juror of the Akademie, Juli Zeh will select the literature fellows for 2007/2009.
