Born in Karachi/Pakistan in 1971.

Bani Abidi is an artist working with video, photography and drawing, based in Berlin/Germany. She studied painting and printing at the National College of Arts in Lahore/Pakistan (BFA) and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago/USA (MFA). She completed residencies with the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine/USA (2000), the Fukuoka Artist Exchange Program, Fukuoka/Japan (2005), and the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program (2011–2012).

Abidi’s work has featured in solo exhibitions at the Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah/UAE (2019); the Gropius-Bau, Berlin (2019); the Neuer Berliner Kunstverein (2017); the Kunsthaus Hamburg/Germany (2016); the Gandhara Art Space, Karachi (2016); Dallas Contemporary, Dallas/USA (2015); the Kunstverein Arnsberg/Germany (2014); Experimenter Gallery, Kolkata/India (2012) and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead/UK (2011) among many others.

She has also shown in many international group exhibitions including the Lahore Biennale (2018); the 8th Berlin Biennale (2014); Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Kerala/India (2012); the 9th Shanghai Biennale, Shanghai/China (2012); dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel/Germany (2012); the 10th Lyon Biennale, Lyon/France (2009); the 7th Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju/South Korea (2008) and the Singapore Biennale (2006).

Abidi’s work is also a part of the collections at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City/USA; the Guggenheim Museum, New York City; the British Museum, London/UK; Tate Modern, London; the Burger Collection, Hong Kong/China; the Devi Arts Foundation, Gurugram/India and the Sharjah Art Foundation.
