She obtained her Master of Fine Arts from The Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, MD.

Botz works as an adjunct professor of photography at the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore and at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore as well as an instructor of photography at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York City.

She is the author of »The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death«, Monacelli Press, New York City (2004), which explores a collection of meticulously crafted crime scene models made by an unsung pioneer of forensic science, Frances Glessner Lee.
