Born 1970 in Debrecen/Hungary.

János Térey works as a poet, playwright and literary translator in Budapest. Most important retranslations into Hungarian include: Paul Verlaine’s »Saturnian Poems« (1994), Alexander Pushkin’s »Boris Godunov« (2002).

He has published several poetry volumes, including »A természetes arrogancia« (The Natural Arrogance, 1993), »Tulajdonosi szemlélet« (Possessors’ Aspect, 1997), »Termann hagyományai« (Termann’s Traditions, 1997), »Sonja útja a Saxonia mozitól a Pirnai térig. Válogatott versek (1988-2001)« (Sonia’s Way from the Saxonia Cinema to the Pirnai Square, selected poems (1988-2001), 2003) as well as the postmodern epic »Paulus« (2001).

His debut in theater, the tetralogy of plays »A Nibelung-lakópark« (The Nibelung Housing Project, 2004) were funded and directed by the celebrated Hungarian director, Kornél Mundruczó and the Krétakör Theater and amongst others presented at the theater festival »Neue Stücke aus Europa« (New Pieces from Europe) in Wiesbaden in 2006. His recent volume of poetry »Ultra« was published in June 2006 with Magvetö. Térey’s translation of Sophocle’s »The Trachiniae« was performed in the small studio theater Kamra in Budapest in 2006. His play »Asztalizene« (Table Musik) soon will be staged in the Radnóti Theater in Budapest.

János Térey was awarded numerous prizes, e. g. the Ern? Szép Award (2004), the Book of the Year Prize, drama (2005), and in 2007 the Critic’s Award for his play »Kazamaták« (Casamates) as the best contemporary Hungarian play 2005/2006.

János Térey is a participant in the writers exchange program between Akademie Schloss Solitude and the József Attila Circle and Collegium Budapest, Hungary.
