Born 1939 in Zürich, died 2005 in Bern. Work at several architecture studios/offices (among others with Prof. Hans Scharoun). 1967 – 73 extended stays as a visual artist in Istanbul, Rom and Amsterdam.

1974 – 82 director of the Kunsthalle Bern.

1980 – 82 member of the artistic board of “documenta 7” (curator Rudi Fuchs).

1983 – 85 exhibition curator for “Die Rekonstruktion der Stadt” (within the international building exhibition), Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin; Triennale di Milano, Milano.

Guest professorships in Karlsruhe, Vienna and Zürich.

1983 Foundation of the publishing house Gachnang & Springer, Bern – Berlin. Publisher since 1983.

1988 – 89 guest curator of the exhibition “Bilderstreit – Widerspruch, Einheit und Fragment in der Kunst seit 1960”, Museum Ludwig, Köln.

Johannes Gachnang lived and worked as a publisher and free lance curator in Bern. He died on October 12, 2005, shortly before his 66th birthday.

Johannes Gachnang was the Akademie jury chair from 1993 to 1996.
