Judit Lilla Molnár

Born in 1991 in Eger/Hungary.

Judit Lilla Molnár is a visual artist who lives and works in Budapest/Hungary. She graduated in painting from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in 2015 and was a doctoral student at the same institution from 2019–2023. In 2013, she spent a semester studying sculpture at the Dresden University of Fine Arts as part of an Erasmus scholarship. In her recently completed doctoral dissertation, drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory, she examined the processes that shape the artistic perspectives and career strategies of Hungarian visual artists of Generation Y within their artistic and social contexts.

Molnár’s artistic practice focuses on the existential, psychological, and social challenges facing her generation. Drawing on personal experience, she examines the social structures that shape individual life trajectories and their psychological consequences. Large-scale installations, often evoking the visual world of playgrounds, have become her preferred medium. Play serves as both a source of formal inspiration and a conceptual tool for translating complex social and psychological processes into elemental visual and spatial structures. During her residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude, she further develops her current artistic inquiries and experiments with new visual and formal approaches to the relationship between social structures and individual psychological experiences.

In recent years, Molnár has participated in numerous exhibitions and residency programs in Hungary and internationally. These include residencies at Schafhof – European Center for Art Upper Bavaria in Freising/Germany (2023), and afo Architekturforum Oberösterreich in Linz/Austria (2023). In 2024, she participated as an invited artist in Salt Lake Cities – STOPS AND STATIONS in Bad Aussee/Austria, a project presented as part of the European Capital of Culture Salzkammergut program. Her recent exhibitions include Under Construction (afo Architekturforum Oberösterreich, Linz, 2024), Snakes and Ladders (The Space, Budapest, 2025), and Playrooms, a duo exhibition with Lina Zylla at Schafhof in Freising (2026).

Together with curator Krisztián Gábor Török, Molnár received the Esterházy Art Dating Prize in 2024. She was awarded the Barcsay Prize in 2025 and the Derkovits Scholarship in 2026. She was also shortlisted for the MODEM Prize (2018), the Esterházy Art Award (2019), and the Leopold Bloom Art Award (2025).

In 2026, Judit Lilla Molnár is a fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude as part of the Solitude Exchange Network, in cooperation with art quarter budapest (aqb) in Budapest.
