Larisa Crunțeanu

Born in 1986 in Romania.

Larisa Crunțeanu is a performer, visual artist, author, and sound collector. Her interdisciplinary practice moves between artistic research, fiction, and social inquiry. Working across video, performance, installation, sound, and text, she develops narrative structures in which facts, memories, and collective imaginaries are reactivated. Her work questions power relations, gender identities, and the relationship between individual and collective forms of subjectivity. Collaboration is a central element of her methodology, and many of her projects emerge from long-term processes of exchange with artists, researchers, and communities across different disciplines.

Combining artistic and academic research with material and social forms of experimentation, Crunțeanu has developed projects addressing topics such as the history of textile workers, military and surveillance technologies in public space, post-socialist architectural heritage, patriarchal structures of discourse, the ecological transformation of former mining landscapes, and the enduring traces of systemic violence on female bodies throughout history. Further areas of focus include the possibility of building solidarities across temporal distances, as well as the social imaginaries and stereotypes that shape perceptions of marginalized identities and bodies. She frequently works with fictional characters and constructed identities as narrative tools at the intersection of reality and speculation.

Her work has been presented internationally at institutions and organizations including the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Romania in Bucharest, SAVVY Contemporary and HAU in Berlin, Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation in Stockholm, Zachęta in Warsaw, and the Museu de Arte Brasileira. Her work has also been featured in the Matter of Art Biennale in Prague, Art Encounters in Timișoara, and the Warsaw Biennale. She has received fellowships and residencies from institutions including the Cité internationale des Arts, Paris (2024–2025), MeetFactory, Prague (2023), the European Alliance of Academies – Akademie der Künste, Berlin (2022), and the Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, São Paulo (2017), as well as a danceWEB scholarship from the ImPulsTanz Festival in Vienna (2014).

Alongside her artistic practice, Crunțeanu works as a curator and cultural organizer. From 2012–2016, she co-coordinated Atelier 35 Bucharest; from 2022–2023, she served as director of the One World Romania festival. Since 2023, she has co-curated the series FIASCO. Videoart evenings. Since 2016, she has also run her own production company focusing on artists’ films, video art, and experimental moving-image works, through which she produces both her own work and projects by other artists.

Crunțeanu holds a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Bucharest (2008), an M.A. in Photography and Moving Image from the National University of Arts, Bucharest (2012), and a practice-based PhD in Visual Arts from the National University of Arts, Bucharest (2021). A substantially revised and English-language version of her dissertation, titled Protocols of Singularity (RO–EN), was published by dispozitiv books in 2023.

In 2026, Larisa Crunțeanu is a fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude as part of the Solitude Exchange Network, in cooperation with ARC Bucharest in Romania.
