Born in Sighetu Marmatiei/Romania in 1985.

Madalina Zaharia is a Romanian artist and filmmaker who lives and works in London/United Kingdom. She received a BA in Photography and Video from the National University of the Arts, Bucharest/Romania (2008) and an MA in Printmaking from the Royal College of Art, London (2012).

Her work explores possible ways of materializing and fictionalizing personal experience in order to instigate and promote change, looking at speculative design, cinema, literature and theater as ways to collectively draw and re-imagine social aspirations and future norms. Her films have been shown at festivals including the BFI London Film Festival 2023 (forthcoming), SQIFF 2021 (Scottish Queer International Film Festival) in Glasgow/Scotland and GRRL HAUS CINEMA 2021 in Boston, MA/USA. Her film Public Figure (made in collaboration with poet and performer Ryan Ormonde) was awarded the prize for Best Film at the Bucharest International Dance Film Festival 2021. Recent exhibitions featuring her work include Inventory of the Week, Sala Omnia, The National Centre for Dance Bucharest (2023); PULS 22, The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest (2023); TrisxtOTL, Ivan Gallery (solo), Bucharest (2022); Viral self-portraits, Moderna galerija (MG+MSUM), Ljubljana/Slovenia (2020) and Art Encounters Biennial, Timisoara/Romania (2019).
