Born 1938 in Copenhagen. Studied natural sciences, expeditions to Greenland, Latin America and the Arctic in the 1960s. As of 1962 at the School for Experimental Art in Copenhagen.

Since 1978 professor at the Kunstakademie (Art Academy) Karlsruhe, since 1989 at the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main. Per Kirkeby works in the fields of painting, drawing, performance (with Beuys, Immendorff), film and stage design. He has published poetry editions and a novel. Numerous exhibitions.

Per Kirkeby lives in Copenhagen.
