Raphael Sbrzesny studied new music, classical percussion and chamber music in Stuttgart and Paris, experimental musical theater and composition in Bern as well as visual arts in Stuttgart and Munich. Nowadays he works in Berlin.

He works in the fields of performance, video, installation and sculpture and has received numerous fellowships and awards. He recently received the Landesgraduiertenstipendium and Arbeitsstipendium of Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, a fellowship for Bundesatelier at Cité Internationale des Arts Paris and the renowned Karl Schmidt-Rottluff fellowship for visual arts. From 2014 to 2016 he worked with a post-graduate fellowship at Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart together with Felix Ensslin on an artistic-scientific research project with the title Das Material des Anderen im Eigenen- Übungen zu einer Ästhetik der Interpretation (The material of the others in oneself – exercises on an esthetics of interpretation). In 2016 he was nominated for Columbus-Förderpreis for current art and in 2017 he was nominated for Großer Hans Purrmann price.

In addition to one-man shows in Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin and in Staatsgalerie Stuttgart Raphael Sbrzesny has also presented is works in different group exhibitions, at Videonale.15 in Bonn, Museum of Applied Art, Leipzig, Kunst-Werke Berlin, in the frame of Open Studios at Villa Romana, Florence and at Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, amongst others.

His first solo exhibition in a museum was shown at Kunstmuseum Stuttgart in the series of Frischzelle 2015/2016. In 2017 he has a residency at HELLERAU – Europäisches Zentrum der Künste Dresden and realizes a project for ZKM Karslruhe. In 2018 he will be present at HAUS DER KUNST in Munich with larger works.

In 2017 the publication Service Continu 7/7 will be released by Spector Books Leipzig in collaboration with the designer Nicolas Zupfer.

Raphael Sbrzesny is a fellow in cooperation with Musik der Jahrhunderte. In 2018 he will realize his musical theater ZWEITER KÖRPER (working title) for ECLAT Festival Neue Musik.
