Shaka McGlotten received their PhD in social anthropology from the University of Texas, Austin, TX/USA in 2005. In 1997 they completed their bachelor studies in studio art at Grinnell College, IA/USA. They currently work as an associate professor for media, society and the arts.

Their most recent works include Zombie Sexuality: Essays on Desire and the Living Dead, McFarland Press (2014), Virtual Intimacies: Media, Affect, and Queer Sociality, SUNY Press (2013), Black Genders and Sexualities, Palgrave (2012) as well as articles in journals.

In 2014 they were a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
