Performance Series: Eine Kaffeefahrt der Menschlichkeit (A Promotion Trip for Humanity) by Michl Schmidt

In Eine Kaffeefahrt der Menschlichkeit, a series of objects, tools and strategies are presented that emerged during Michl Schmidt’s time at the Akademie Schloss Solitude. His artistic confrontations primarily address the concrete viability (doability) of projects. Through his Solitude fellowship, he asks the question, »What do I do when my apartment is paid for and I have enough discretionary money to cover my living costs?« The question results in a series of elements that deal with a kind of »bricolage de luxe«, without slipping into existential necessity. Here, objects emerge, which on the one hand possess an unusual use value and at the same time depict the reflection of their story; their own myth.

Die Performance explores the intermediation of objects that make no illusion of standing for themselves, but rather require some sort of communication. The artist takes on the role of a direct marketer, beyond the channels of art dealing and selling.
