With the performance Scheherazade im Flughafen (Sheherezade at the Airport) Narges Hashmepour transfers the Oriental fairy-tale character Sheherazade, with her many faces from 1001 Nights, into the globalized space of an airport. The storyteller becomes part of our reality, is located in an airport, in a world of pure exchange and transformation outside space and time. Through the performance, the airport’s repressive control mechanisms, security measures, regulations and diffuse dynamics appear in a new light. With her narrations, Sheherezade is among us in her stories; and her need to tell, understand and dream reflects our present time.
The performance is a collaboration with the Italian sound artist Andrea Melloni, who created the soundscape for the narrations.
Narges Hashempour (*1967 in Teheran) studied acting and directing at the Azad University in Teheran. She works as an actress and director in various theaters in Teheran and is a member of a contemporary theater group and the artists association Iran Theatre House. Hashempour has been an Akademie fellow since October 2005.
