Exhibition »NEUE SEHER« featuring Benigno Mangovo

Current Akademie Schloss Solitude fellow Benigno Mangovo is presenting his work as part of the exhibition NEUE SEHER at MAQUIS MAMI WATA in Mannheim.

Curated by Stefan Wäldele, the exhibition explores the relationship between seeing, knowing, and the creation of meaning. It takes as its starting point the question of what happens to knowledge when its forms and techniques are adopted without understanding their origins or inner logic. In doing so, NEUE SEHER also examines the role of images and artistic forms: How do they shape our perception, and how can they produce meaning?

The title NEUE SEHER does not propose a new movement or group of artists. Instead, it describes a position »beyond the artist«, distinguishing between the act of seeing and the knowledge that can emerge from it.

Working across painting and film, Benigno Mangovo draws on personal experience to explore perception, spirituality, memory, interpersonal relationships, and the connections between people and the places they inhabit. His artistic practice thus resonates with the exhibition’s central questions around perception, knowledge, and meaning. Benigno Mangovo is a 2026 fellow at Akademie Schloss Solitude in the Visual sphere of practice.
