Born 1968 in Freiburg. He studied violin at the Freiburg School of Music (as a scholar of Prof. Jörg Hofmann). Since 1991, he has been playing with the Ensemble of the Institute for New Music (conducted by A. Tamayo). In 1996 he was a lecturer at the “Eartalk” meeting for young composers.

Since 1993, he has been an independent musician. There have been frequent and intensive cooperations with composers. He is a member of the Thürmchen Ensemble (Cologne) and the Ensemble SurPlus (Freiburg). Numerous concerts in several countries, including the violin concerts at the Akademie Schloss Solitude 1997.

Recipient of the Darmstadt Grant 1994.

Several publications, including one solo CD: “Clemens Merkel” 1998 (Wandelweiser records) performing works by Antoine Beuger, Bruno Maderna, Wolfgang von Schweinitz and Thomas Stiegler.
