Composer and son of German publisher Kurt Wolff. Born in Nizza, since 1941 mostly living in the United States.

Piano studies with Grete Sultan and a (short) study of composition with John Cage.

Mostly self taught, but early contacts to John Cage, David Tudor, Morton Feldman and others.

Studied classical languages and literature and comparative literature.

Since 1962 teaching positions, since 1978 professor of music and classical languages and literature at Dartmouth College, Hanover/USA.

Numerous publications on classical antiquity and on various aspects of new music.
