Born in Istanbul/Turkey in 1981.

Ege Kanar received his undergraduate degree in Visual Arts and Communication Design from the Sabancı University in Istanbul (2000–2004). He obtained his advanced degree in photography from the Film and TV School (FAMU) at the Academy of Performing Arts Prague/Czech Republic (2005–2008).

Kanar’s photographic practice addresses images from an ontological standpoint and scrutinizes the intermediary role of photographs within various scientific and cultural contexts. His recent projects incorporate sound, video, and installations and treat notions of rhythm, scale, and materiality.

Kanar’s past solo shows in Istanbul include Apparatus, Versus Art Project (2019); Hammer for Scale, poşe art space (2018) and Surface Studies, El Hamra Han (2014). Some recent group shows he has participated in are Sound is the Silence of the Image, Fabrikraum, Vienna/Austria (2022); Workaround, Förderverein Aktuelle Kunst Münster e. V. (FAK), Münster/Germany (2021); Past Present Istanbul, Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Istanbul (2021) and Tempo Incognito, Depo, Istanbul (2021).

Alongside his artistic practice, Kanar also taught at the Department of Photography and Video at Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul (2016–2020). He was a resident artist at SAHA Studio, Istanbul (January till September 2021).

Ege Kanar currently resides in Istanbul.
