Born 1984 in Lindau/Germany.
Lars Preisser is an artist based in Berlin/Germany. His practice responds to conditions in a postindustrial age. Working across drawing, weaving, and film, he questions normative structures in industry and society and invents alternative realities. His projects often emerge from long-term artistic research and combine precise observations of social and technological developments with a surreal, intricate visual language. His upbringing, marked by the contrast between a working-class neighborhood in Berlin during the 1990s and luxurious holiday settings with his extended family from the industrial elite, has fundamentally shaped his artistic stance. His practice is deeply rooted in these ambivalent experiences, which are reflected in his work addressing themes such as gentrification, climate change, and postcolonial histories, as well as in his interest in distinctive materials and technologies of our time.
Preisser studied textile art at Otago Polytechnic School of Art, Ōtepoti/New Zealand (2006–2009), and media art/expanded cinema at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig, Leipzig/Germany (2016–2019). Exhibitions include Contextile Biennial (2022 and 2026), Guimarães/Portugal; Zeit der letzten Brachen, station urbaner kulturen/nGbK, Berlin/Germany (2019); and Best in Show, Objectspace, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland/New Zealand (2010). In 2026, he was an artist in residence at La Fabrique des Arts, Fondation Fiminco, in Romainville/France. Previous fellowships include the Research Stipend from the Senatsverwaltung für Kultur und Europa, Berlin/Germany (2021), and the Maker/Creator Fellowship at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, Winterthur/USA (2022).
