From 1983 to 1993 Hans-Joachim Ruckhäberle was the chief dramaturge and member of the board of artistic directors of the Munich Kammerspiele (general director: Dieter Dorn).

Since 1986 he has been a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and is presently deputy chairman of the Department of Performing Arts there.

Hans-Joachim Ruckhäberle was the Akademie jury chair from 1997 to 1999.
