As part of the Reykjavík Arts Festival, Karin Sander has opened a solo exhibition at the Reykjavík Art Museum.
The exhibition Karin Sander 1957–2057 brings together works from around 30 years and offers a concentrated insight into the artist’s oeuvre – including projects created during her time in Iceland.
The exhibited works include new pieces from the series Weathered Paintings. For this series, Sander places untreated canvases in unusual locations and exposes them to the local environmental conditions over extended periods. Instead of traditional painting techniques, the works emerge through natural weathering processes. The pieces realized at various sites in Iceland reflect Sander’s long-standing interest in the interplay of material, time, and place.
Karin Sander studied in Stuttgart and New York City and has held professorships at the Weißensee Academy of Art Berlin and ETH Zurich. Together with Philip Ursprung – who later served as jury chairman at Akademie Schloss Solitude – she represented Switzerland at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale.
Sander has maintained a long-standing relationship with Akademie Schloss Solitude: in 1995, she was a fellow in the Fine Arts department and later returned as a jury member for the same field.
