STATION Service for Contemporary Dance in Serbia
StationOne is a residency program established by STATION Service for contemporary dance in 2015 as a platform for residency exchange with StATION’s diverse international partners. The residency exchange is conceived as support for the local dance scene: It offers opportunities for artists from Serbia to participate in residency programs within an extensive partner network; at the same time, by hosting artists from various parts of the world, STATION opens the local dance and arts scene to new collaborators, fresh perspectives and future joint projects.
The program extends support to artists, theorists and curators across contemporary dance, performance and experimental interdisciplinary practices. StationOne takes place in the self-organized cultural center Magacin – a unique structure created and governed by the independent cultural scene in Belgrade, located in the city center, which STATION co-founded in 2007. Both STATION and Magacin operate through self-organization, horizontal work structures and feminist principles, aiming to build the fields of arts and culture into more democratic, open, sustainable, and fair areas of social engagement. These are the values shared with resident artists, and the program is glad to host those interested in similar approaches.
Resident artists are given the opportunity to immerse themselves in this self-organized cultural space, to meet a wide range of artists and cultural workers and to access many other art and cultural venues throughout Belgrade. The working space at Magacin includes dance studios, office space, a gallery as well as a workshop (with a wide range of tools, machines and artists ready to teach and help) and a network of people with diverse knowledge.
One of the core principles of StationOne is fostering long-term relationships with resident artists: The program aspires to create connections that extend beyond the residency period — maintaining communication and inviting artists to return and engage in other STATION programs and projects.
